Desna (a Slavic word meaning "right hand") - a river flowing in Sumy, Chernihiv and Kyiv regions of Ukraine, left affluent of the Dnieper. It starts in Smolensk Hills in Russia, flows into Dnieper on the northern outskirts of Kyiv, flows mainly to the south / southwest. Length in Ukraine - 591 km (367 mi). Desna Valley is mostly trapezoidal, asymmetric in the upper and middle reaches, with low left and high right banks. Downstream banks are flat and sandy. River floodplain has many creeks and lakes. River bed is winding, up to 450 m (492 yards) wide, average width is 200 m (220 yards).
