Hutsul Alps (also known as Rakhiv Mountains and Maramureş) are westernmost part of the Maramureş- Bukovynian Upland, located on the Ukraine-Romania border. Ukrainian part of Hutsul Alps lies in the southern part of Rakhiv district (Zakarpattia region). These are the most diverse and picturesque mountains in the Ukrainian Carpathians due to high altitude (highest mountain – Pip Ivan Maramureș, 1,938 m or 6,358 ft), diverse geological structure and deep valleys (up to 1,500 meters or 4,920 ft) and rivers.
Marmoroskyi protected massif is a part of Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. Since the mountains are located at the state border, it is important to have the necessary documents to stay in the border areas. It should be done in advance at Mukachevo border detachment.
