Black Mountain or Pip Ivan is the third highest peak of Ukraine (2,028 m or 6,654 ft). Located in the south-eastern end of the Chornohora main ridge, on the border of Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions. Got its name from a rock on the top which looked like a priest in a cassock.
The mountain is covered with spruce forests (up to a height of 1,500-1,600 m or 4,920-5,250 ft), above – subalpine meadows. The ruins of Polish astronomic and meteorological observatory White Elephant, built in 1936-38 are preserved on the top. In 2012 the renovation of the observatory began and is expected to be finished in 2018.
