Bakotska Bay (or Bakotske Sea) is a part of Dniester reservoir, formed in 1980-s during the filling of a low area of the Dniester River valley with waters of the newly-constructed Dniester Reservoir located downstream. The bay got its name from the village Bakota, once located on the site of the current bay. Now the Bakota Sea surface area is 1,590 hectares (3,929 acres). The bay is located in the National Park “Podilski Tovtry”.
Banks are high, covered with forest. The highlight of the area is Mount Bila, which is propped up by the bizarre rock composed of thin-layer slates. There is a monastery inside the mountain – the remains of cave city of X-XIII centuries.
There is a legend that by the amount of heat for 1 sq.m. Bakota is equivalent to Yalta (thanks to microclimate), but there is no vegetation, similar to Crimean.
